Fernie, British Columbia

It's just hit 1pm on January the 12th, which makes it 6am on the 13th back home in sunny Queensland... I'm having a relaxing day, trying to fight off a bit of a sore throat (I refuse to be sick for my arrival in Peru in 6 days time!). I still can't get over how beautiful this place is, the white glow from fresh snow makes everything look crisp and clean. On he other hand, I'm finding making snow men and having snow ball fights a lot different than how it's portrayed in movies... Though it looks fluffy and inviting my hands go numb pretty fast, I haven't attempted a snow angel yet but I'm determined to do that before I leave as well :D (all that being said it's really not so bad when you know there's a hot shower waiting just inside the house).

Last night we went ice skating! (We being Shauni's housemates and a few others from their circle of friends) After finding my balance I remembered that it wasn't so hard to glide around the ice rink, and it was pretty entertaining watching some of the boys gain a little more confidence and pick up speed and attempt to stop and turn. There was a few funny falls and close calls, as well as a race that ended in Jack slamming into the baracade pretty hard. I'm pretty happy to say I only lost balance once or twice, and both Shauni and I avoided falling on our ass (but I can't say the same for Jess...).

The night before last Jess, Jack, Sarah and I went to a trivia game at the local pub (Shauni joined us later after work). We weren't sure how we would go, assuming the questions would favor the locals, turns out the questions didn't specifically relate to any one nationality, everyone found it quite difficult. We struggled in rounds like 'American Facts' and 'Athlete Nicknames', but did surprisingly well in geography. Despite a little confidence gained, we came dead last... but after making friends with the host we were given a prize anyway- a lovely whiteboard and marker haha. Anyway it was a good night of laughs and we all learnt a fact or two!

Only two nights and three days left in Fernie before we head over the US border into a town called Whitefish, and after one night there Shauni and I will head to Kalispell, Montana where we fly to San Fran! My excitement has skyrocketed after Shauni's housemate Keith suggested we go to a NBA game, we checked the schedule and the Denver Nuggets will play the Warriors while we are in town! We also want to visit Alcatraz and possibly hire bikes to explore the city.

Inside Shauni's little home, just about to head out for some local trivia
Trying to get my balance on the ice...!
Jimmy, Jack and Scazie on the ice
The race.. Jack and Jimmy lead. Such a pity Jack doesn't know how to stop.. The crash when he hit the wall was pretty loud!

Arriving in Canada!

After my last shift at work and a night of restlessness, I got on a plane to LA. The flight was not as painful as I thought and everything ran smoothly at the airport! LAX was impressive and everyone was really helpful, I got to my gate and read a book under a blanket while I waited for my short flight to Calgary. The flight was delayed, but it didn't bother me to much, with no phone and no internet I didn't really have any other choice than to sit, read and relax (which was 100% fine with me!).

Finally I arrived in Calgary where I found my amazing friend Shauni waiting to pick me up, and after a short drive to our hotel I was ready to crash. I managed to get out of jet lag pretty easily (my lack of sleep made it easy to pass out on a comfy bed no matter what time my body thought it was...), so the next morning off we drove to Shauni's home in Fernie, British Columbia. The drive was interesting, with icy roads and snow everywhere it was a little nerve-racking, but soon enough I learnt to trust Shauni's driving and managed to squeeze in a nap.

Fernie is beautiful, it's now my third day here, and I'm pretty happy with my accomplishments so far! I've been up the hill twice and my snowboarding skills are slowly improving... (I only face planted once today) tomorrow I will move on from the kids mountain, 'The Mighty Moose' and onto some of the real slopes! Haven't had a chance to snap any photos yet, but will definitely take the camera up tomorrow.

Enjoying an icy smoothly after my first trip up the hill!

First & Foremost

Here we go... my names Steph and I have officially caught the travel bug. And so, I'm getting on the blogging scene to document anything and everything about my travels.

Anyway, a bit about me- I'm 21 and originally from Victoria, but spent most my life in sunny Queensland. I have lived in Brisbane for the past 4 years whilst completing my degree. After graduating I set off for Cambodia, which was easily the most amazing/rewarding experience of my life (photos below). I would DEFINITELY recommend volunteering in Siem Reap, and if you'd like to know more check out the brilliant NGO I worked with:

Next on the agenda is South America, with a brief visit to Canada first. I'm so excited to embark on this two month adventure!!

So, anyone looking to track my travels or keep an eye on me (pointing the finger at you mum!), follow me, comment, and have a read.
